{"id":3133,"date":"2021-12-23T12:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-12-23T12:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsmediauk.org\/nme-calls-for-action-on-slapps\/"},"modified":"2024-05-03T09:38:35","modified_gmt":"2024-05-03T08:38:35","slug":"nme-calls-for-action-on-slapps","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsmediauk.org\/blog\/2021\/12\/23\/nme-calls-for-action-on-slapps\/","title":{"rendered":"NME Calls For Action On SLAPPS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>News Media Europe has made a series of recommendations to protect and enhance press freedom following a report on the impact of strategic lawsuits against public participation on the news media sector.<\/p>\n<p>As part of its December 2020 European democracy action plan, the European Commission has set an ambitious agenda with the aim of delivering a legislative proposal to protect news media from SLAPPs by spring 2022.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsmediaeurope.eu\/issues\/report-on-the-impact-of-strategic-lawsuits-against-public-participation-slapps-on-the-news-media-sector\/\">NME&rsquo;s report on SLAPPs<\/a>&nbsp;is a collection of findings following interviews with media professionals, academics, and other stakeholders. broken down by jurisdiction and makes 10 recommendations for action on SLAPPs.<\/p>\n<p>The recommendations are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To include newsrooms and press publishers in the scope of the EU Directive on SLAPPs to grant them adequate protection against SLAPPs.<\/li>\n<li>To provide EU harmonized rules recognising and defining SLAPPs to identify abusive lawsuits and have them dismissed at an early stage.<\/li>\n<li>When assessing dismissal, to protect investigative journalism by considering a web of indicators such as parties&rsquo; unequal powers, media freedom, public interest and contribution to democracy.<\/li>\n<li>To review the Brussels I (recast) and Rome II Regulations to make abusive lawsuits more difficult and limit forum shopping with stricter conflicts of laws rules for defamation and privacy.<\/li>\n<li>To limit the number of connected claims brought by the same plaintiff, its representatives or affiliates, against newsrooms.
